Broken Laptop screen?

I accidently cracked my laptop screen, and I am waiting for my b-day for a replacement screen, so for now, I am using a desktop moniter to show the screen. So could I remove the laptop screen and still use it in this setup. Basically i want the laptop as a computer, keyboard, and mouse, with the screen unattached from it. Will this work, w/o f'ing up my computer?
